I am not a PH.D. I do not have a Master’s degree in psychology. I am not a doctor or a therapist. What I am is a mother. I am a mother of addict alcoholic children. All of my children are addicts/alcoholics, and what I know today has come from my journey to hell and back with these incredible kids. The signs of addiction are not always apparent. Early signs may go undetected because we are not prepared to see them, or don’t understand what they are when we do. In any case, they don’t disappear when we close our eyes, and they eventually get more pronounced if ignored. This is what I have experienced and have learned along the way. Loving an addict is painful. We want to. We try. We give it everything we’ve got. Our hearts break. Our dreams die. We fall down and get up again. We cry. And cry some more. We ask questions. We seek answers. We strive to understand. And the heartache comes. We grieve for the loss of our dreams - the white picket fence, the children going off to college. We mourn the loss of what we had been raised to believe would be our life. We argue with God. We feel out of control, so we try to control the lives of everyone around us. We hold on for dear life. We agonize. We bargain. We pray. And the heartache comes. We beg. We plead. We offer advice. We suggest treatment. We give money. We bail them out of jail. We find them a job. We let them come home to live. We believe that it will be different. We give up. We give out. We sleep too much. We don’t sleep at all. And the heartache comes. My life has been surrounded by this disease. My father. My brother. My grandfather and my two ex-husbands. My friends and distant family members. And my children. All three of them. Loving alcoholics and addicts is what I have been called to do. It is my story. It is my family. It is my life.

Good story however a lot of filler details to get to any advice or self-help. I would categorize the book as non-fiction but not as self-help. The title is good and the book has so much potential. I think with a good editor this book could be really great and a much needed topic for parents of addicts.Product details

Letting Go of Shame A Mother Journey Raising Addict Children Susan Goodson 9780991296200 Books Reviews
Nobody consciously chooses alcoholism or addiction. Certainly nobody consciously chooses an alcoholic or addict partner or child. Yet, it happens. It happens to young and old, rich and poor, well-educated and ignorant, professional people and factory workers, housewives and mothers. It happens to people with families, friends, and jobs or lack thereof. It just happens and we didn't cause it, we can't control it and we can't cure it. It is baffling. Thank you Susan Goodson for sharing your experience, strength and hope with me personally and with all who read this book. Whether you share Susan's experience or not, her book provides invaluable insight to the lives of families affected by alcoholism or addiction. Families just like mine and yours and most of the people around you every day. Give yourself and someone you love this book....this gift of insight...and be blessed.
Susan Goodson's book is truly a courageous woman's saga of her personal journey dealing with addict children. She is completely open and authentic about her experiences and demonstrates the value of courageous vulnerability as she tells her story. I was touched.
I have not experienced the journey of raising addict children, but Susan Goodson is compelling in her transparency and honesty about the challenges, joys and sorrows, and ultimately understanding and acceptance of her role and responsibility to the children she loves so deeply. I realized in reading this book that everyone has a story, and it's not always evident on the surface. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is in the midst of this trial, and anyone looking to find sanity in a world that doesn't make sense.
I was told by a family member of Susan Goodson that this book may help me with my ongoing journey with my oldest son who is struggling with addiction.
I was feeling lost and didn't know what to do. I agonized over what is helping and what is hurting.
I must say this book has made me feel not so alone. Every page, every incident I read, I felt like I was reading my own story with my son.
Thank you Ava for turning me on to this book, and thank you Susan. From one Mother to another. Thank you so much for this book.
I am now looking into going to meetings for support to better know how to deal with all this.
I'm passing this book on to my Mother and other family members.

As a mother of three addicts I felt as if I was walking in Susan's shoes. The sharing of her true feelings made me feel like I was not alone in my journey. The heartaches she went through were some of the same things I have experienced. Every person with an addicted child should read this book as addiction is a family disease. The more you understand about addiction the more peaceful your life will become.
Susan has written things most people would be so ashamed to admit. But all of us learn through our experiences! Why we become ashamed of telling the hard journey so many of us must tale to become the women we were meant to be is hard to fathom. I am blessed to be able to learn from this wise and loving lady that it is always ok to let the Lord lead us and to listen for his voice. I cried, I laughed, I put the book down to examine my own memories. You will not be the same person when you finish reading this book and that will be a good thing!
Susan's book is incredible. It is her journey through hell and back with her children who are addicts. I recommend this book for any parent who is experiencing those tough decisions about how to help their addict children - no matter the age. Her candor and insight of her journey will instill that there is hope for parents just as her. We always hear that addicts must do the work themselves. Yet, Susan tells us that it takes more than just thinking about helping these kids. The notion of Tough Love is always there, but how do you as a parent survive going through it. Susan gives you what she had to do and what she had to endure. An incredible gut-wrenching story of her journey. I have know Susan for over 10 years and I never knew this personal side of her. She has always been energetic and supportive - her loving developed with the coping she learned along the way. Who would have known this about Susan. She endured despite.
Good story however a lot of filler details to get to any advice or self-help. I would categorize the book as non-fiction but not as self-help. The title is good and the book has so much potential. I think with a good editor this book could be really great and a much needed topic for parents of addicts.
